City Briefs: City emergency ops ebb with waning flood threat

The City of Kamloops’s emergency operations centre is scaling back its works as the river levels recede.

Plans are now being mapped out for the removal of the Gabion flood baskets and opening of sealed catch basins next week when river levels reach an acceptable point.

Starting July 9, the City will offer sandbag pickup for residents. It will work similarly to garbage collection, where sandbags will be set out on the curb and be gathered the day after regularly scheduled garbage pickup.

Residents who want to remove sandbags themselves can drop them off at Mission Flats or Barnhartvale landfills at no charge.

The river current is fast and residents are being cautioned to be careful along waterfront areas and on the Rivers Trail where sand and gravel are on the pathway.

City agricultural survey is done

The results of a survey asking Kamloops residents and food sellers about local agricultural issues is completed and available for the viewing.

The poll is part of the information gathering for the City’s agricultural area plan and looked at agricultural issues, successes and food buying patterns.

The overall plan will look at the relationships among the City, the area’s agricultural community and the Agricultural Land Commission.

Survey results did indicate agricultural planning is overdue and something residents care about.

Respondents included 82 local producers, 298 consumers and 312 retailers.
