Sports Briefs: Seven named to Summer Games team

Ian Stedeford scored on a penalty kick in the final two minutes as Kamcon secured a 1-1 draw with Duffy’s Pub in a Kamloops Recreational Soccer League 45-plus game Wednesday.

Bill Frymire had the goal for Duffy’s, which had Jeff Putnam in goal. Peter Hack was the Kamcon ’keeper.

In another Wednesday game, Rob Piva scored twice as Ideal MSP defeated Frick and Frack 4-1. Jim Strain and Gulio Leone had the other Ideal goals, while Brian Flamank scored for the pubmen.

Seven Kamloops athletes have been named to the Zone 2 track and field team that will compete at the B.C. Summer Games in Surrey from July 19-22.

The seven are part of the zone’s 32-athlete team, which includes athletes from Kelowna, Revelstoke, Vernon, Lumby, Okanagan Falls, Summerland, West Kelowna and Canoe. The team also has five coaches.

All the Zone 2 athletes, who were chosen after trials last month, are 14 or 15 years old.

Madison Allen will be competing in discus and high jump, while Danielle Belliveau is set to participate in the high jump, triple jump and long jump. Kendall Fitzgerald will be running in the 800 metres, 1,200m and 2,000m, while sprinter Avery Marshall is on tap for the 100m and 200m.

Alex Smith-Van Dyke has qualified in pole vault, while Matthew Blackstock is set to compete in 100m and 200m. Bryce Turner will take part in the 1,500m steeplechase and 2,000m.
